Default active crossover state variable filter

I presently use a Marchand active crossover between my Alpair 10 open baffle and my air-suspension woofers.

Lately I've been looking at changing the crossover. I find two ways that the Linkwitz-Riley 24dB/oct function is generated:
cascaded butterworth filters and state variable as in my Marchand.

The Marchand offers a damping function which can boost or cut the level at the crossover frequency. The cascaded butterworth designs would need an additional stage to accomplish this, I think.

Any experience anyone can offer on the difference in sound between these two designs would be appreciated.

Thanks
Les
