Fine sounding Horns

Hi,

I am interested in building a pair of horns along the lines of the Avante-garde Nano Uno's i.e active subwoofer, horn mid and horn tweeter.
Does anyone know of a DIY project that has successfully built a pair of great sounding horns?

nope, but we can get you close.................

stereolabs horns 400hz on ebay, not cheap but probably very good.
Use a 2" compression driver (community m200a) from 600hz to 4khz.

I'd use a 15 under and a piezo above.
I think it is a 1" rcf used in the avantegarde.

Active crossover also, passive will be a pain.

Yes, I have built a couple of versions, but they are long dismantled as I've moved to smaller digs. I've not been all that impressed with the AG's I've heard.

I've not seen any full designs posted in as much detail.

My last system was similar MF/HF with an expo midbass and LABsubs for bass, quad amped. I used his EVM12L midbass in an earlier incarnation.

Have you heard them? I've listened to them twice, and was disappointed both times. I've heard a handful of horns at half the price which sounded twice as good.

I have built several loudspeakers but never horns.
I admit to being seduced by the form of the Nano's and I have just started to investigate the possibility of building something similar. Never heard them but they recently received a decent review in Stereophile so it caught my interest
I appreciate all the feedback.
Again i am in the "what if" stage so still along way to go

Isn't that par for the course? Stereophile habitually gives positive reviews. I'd take anything they say with a grain of salt.

Horns are tricky, hard to get out every reflection.

And breaks in the angle, or any parallel surfaces, you are screwed.

And again, most non cd horns require eq (the compression drivers roll off.

I'd say only a handfull of horns are usable for home audio (practically zero echo).

But that would involve a 3-way or eq, and an active crossover.

But the top 2 and probably the bottom 1 are fine sounding horns.
