Very interesting point! Need statistics for that Personally i have moved from monopole to dipole. Because it sounds more natural,more similar to free field listening.
If both correct designed, dipole=monopole in free space. As we move from free space to small rooms, not acoustically treated(ordinary rooms) with two speakers the difference gets bigger and bigger. As for the same on axis SPL dipoles or cardioids radiates less power compared to monopoles. We all know energy conservation law. That additional radiated power can't disappear without any consequences. Thats a very basic explanation,but thats the beginning from where we have to start thinking about that IMHO.
