Default Cone tweeters?

Cone tweeters used to be fairly common back when domes were stil somewhat exotic and expensive..

Does anybody know if there are any companies making "modern" quality hi-fi cone-tweeters today?

And why would I be interested?

Today, it seems that maximum dispersion and off-axis response is the way to go.

but why would one disperse the sound in all directions causing all sorts of early reflections?

I had a pair of rather large voight-horns with Coral flat 8 II's crossed over to a coral horn-tweeter at 7 khz. Not exactly a flat frequency response and probably a fair bit of distortion as well.. but those speakers were very dynamic and had great imaging. I strongly suspect that this was in part due to the directivity of the drivers used.

So perhaps a large "beaming" tweeter" (cone) isn't such a bad thing after all?

Opinions and advise velcome!

PS.

Beaming doesn't have much to do with the shape of the diaphragm, given that it moves pistonically.

True, true,

It is not the shape, but the size and the sonic velocity in the diaphragm material that dictates when beaming occurs. In theory, a 2" cone and a 2" dome will have the same directional characteristic if they are made from the same material.

But to my knowledge, dome tweeters that big seem to be even more rare than cone tweeters.. (?)

Hi Elbert,
Davis acoustics comes to mind.

Personally I'm very fond of my old JBL LE-26 tweeters.

Matsushita (Panasonic) make one that's good from 4KHz up, actually they seem to make a few good drivers, but they don't seem to be generally available, perhaps available as 'replacements'

Ah!

Interresting..

Those Davis tweeters look like quite something!

Has anybody listened to these?
To bad the frequency plots and technical data on the Davis site is a bit minimal.
Obviously a bit on the expensive side, but then again, this looks like proper hi-fi components.

Looking at the spec's and the plots for that Peerless tweeter, I can't help but wonder where the drawback is hidden. Despite their diminutive and slightly cheap looks, the data and curves look very promising, if not to say impressive!

Wonder what their distrortion curves would look like?

4fun, have you ever used these in any application, or just tested them?

Perhaps I should try them my self if you have a pair up for grabs?

I used to have a pair of the French Audax TW-8B aluminium cone super tweeter, but this is also discontinued. Never heard anything comparable.
