Default looking for suggestions for my first one

Hi everybody,

after a week of searching the net for my first project with no luck i decided it will be better to ask for suggestions.

since i am new to this, i am looking for a floorstanding well known project with almost step by step guides as detailed as it gets, my budget is a little bit on the low side- around 400 USD for drivers and XO parts.

suggestions will be greatly appriciated

thanks.

Default suggest Usher 7" 2-way design

Parts Express has sale prices and free shipping on drivers. 2 woofers and 2 tweeters will run you around $340. I don't know if they charge sales tax. Murphyblaster.com has crossover plans and measurements, speaker model numbers, comments, etc. If you were to buy all the crossover parts from Madisound crossovers would run around $120/pair, (you have to be conservative, pick good quality but not BEST quality parts). Total so far is $460. Round up to $500 to cover tax, terminal cups, and whatever I forgot to mention.

These are made-in-Taiwan clones of Scan-Speak products. Scan-Speak is without a doubt one of the best speaker manufacturers in the world. From comments I have read, the Usher models are very good as well. There are many good opinions of them around the web.

The boxes Dennis Murphy used were around 1.3 cubic feet. Not small and not large. Depending on how you build your boxes they could be towers I guess. You could always have a hollow cavity in the bottom to make the apparent size of cabinet larger and just fill that cavity with playsand.

Dennis spends a lot of time getting the crossovers just right. I would not hesitate to recommend his work but if you do some research, someone else may have plans for a cheaper crossover with less parts in it, if you really have to stick to your budget.

The most expensive parts are the Inductors. IF you start building the cabinets, and save some dollars, and look around for bargains on the web for used or surplus parts you might be able to manage the price.

GOOD LUCK!

Jays Peerless combo looks a pretty good bang for buck build:

Default Check Pete's link for more Usher

Pete, above, provides a link. When I clicked on it, I noticed there is another Usher design available there. Crossover design is in its second improved version. Listening opinions and all.

You'll find the problem isn't finding a project, but choosing among the many very good ones out there.

I fell that for your budget a 1 way or 2-way will get you the furthest, my personal preference being a 1-way.

What is your room like, and what kind of amp(s) do you have?
