Default Your advice on some new (outdated) drivers

Hi all,

After a 15 year break I'm ready to jump back into the hobby of DIY speakers. I've been reading through the forums and browsing components to try and get back in touch with the scene.

From my last project (which never happened) I've had some brand new, unused drivers in storage and wonder if they're still worth putting into a design. So much has changed and there have been many advances in technology, although at the time I purchased them I thought they were rated pretty good. I am not sure how they compare by todays standards as I see they have since been discontinued.

Anyway, if anyone has advice on, opinions about, or experience with any of these drivers I'd sure appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!

The mid is sealed back, although these aren't in fashion here, should make an OK traditional 3-way with a modern mid woofer or two handling the bottom end

I'm thinking something like this style:

Perhaps a better terminology for those Peerless mids would be "Integral-enclosure" to distinguish them from older style rubbish with no volume and no damping in the sealed section.

Default (Directed to Retroman) Wondering if you decided to use the 821615 mids?

(Directed to Retroman) Wondering if you decided to use the 821615 mids? If not, would you be interested in selling them? I have a project that calls for a mid with such specifications.

Default Peerless mids

Hey Ted, did you mean the Peerless 821628 as being rubbish ? This is the one with the 100mm polycone and a sealed basket of low volume.
if so, you're wrong, it measures quite nicely and sounds fine.
I have a couple of them in the cupboard.
p.s do you still want that Jaycar 12" polycone ? Cos the next trip to the tip is tomorrow (sunday arvo)

Yes I want the Jaycar polycone, just tell me how much is postage to 3214 and I'll transfer the money, unless you are still moving to Melbourne and want to throw it in the boot.

My comment on sealed back mids was directed more to drivers like the Jaycar sealed back polycone, and others like it that have the steel backing 1/3 mm away from the cone surface with no fiber damping at all.
That 5inch Jaycar sealed back is a POS!
That was why I said in post #3 that the Peerless type should be called integral enclosures
