I'm working on a new 3way speaker from a scratch design. Eventually I'd like this to a an active system. Right now I'm using a crown stereo amp for power and crossover(digital) duties so I can adjust more easily. The issue is that finding a tri-amp suitable for active mounting is difficult, much less finding a good one(and $$$!!). I could build a 3way tube amp for, which would be kinda cool. But this will get in the way of developing the speaker for a couple of months I'm guessing.
So the question is this. Since my speaker has about a 105~110db sensitivity can I just drive it directly from a DSP crossover at line levels? Only temporarily until I can afford to do proper amps of course Someone told me line level is about 2V in general but what's the wattage? 1/3watt should be fine right? also, any thoughts on the resistance loads a digital crossover is intended to drive vs. a speakers's load |

btw, google "41hz audio amp kits"
They have several small and cheap amp modules that might suit your needs |

An op-amp, as might be used for a line-level output, will typically have a maximum output current of around 20mA. This is woefully inadequate to drive a speaker. You will at best get a quiet, but horribly distorted output, and at worst you will fry something.

Hi Mach5,
Some guys in France - I think one of them is JM Le Cleac'h - have loaded the output of a DCX Bheringer with horns through an elevating transformer. As JM is writing on this forum, you could ask him more details. |

Crown xti 2000 has a built in DSP It's not the ideal hifi amp though and a bit bulky to mount to the speaker and it's only stereo. |
