Default Project just fell into my lap, need some advice

Long story short, I often go to thrift stores with my 14 year old daughter. We call it treasure hunting because you never know what you might find. This weekend we are "prospecting" and I'm getting a little bored so I wonder into the furniture section. I can't even believe what I found among the dilapidated couches and mismatched tables and chairs....These naked speaker cabinets!! They were marked $20.20 each, brand new and BEAUTIFUL!

I mean how could I say no? It looked like they were pretty darn heavy, decently braced, 3/4" MDF, what looked to me like 7" and 3" speaker openings, and they were brand new and never had a speaker mounted in them. I'm guessing it was part of a kit of some kind.

Once I got them home my happy bubble was a little deflated. It seems this cabinet has an odd speaker size. The two woofer holes are 7 3/4" with a 6 1/2" cut out. I've been looking all over and can find a good 7 3/4" speaker. I don't think two 8" will fit because the holes are too close together.

I've already bought a gallon of eDead and also plan on putting in additional bracing. But what I really need is a good 7 3/4" speaker. I think I can get a 7" speaker to work, but that is not my first choice.

I just bought a hybrid tube amplifier the Yaqin VK-2100 I will be pairing it with it.

Any help with good drivers and crossover would be greatly appreciated. My budget is $500 so nothing too expensive ;-)

Probably that may be the reason why they sell for that little money If I were you, I'd use epoxy wood filler to make 7" drivers fit there and repaint the baffle. What are the tweeter cutout and recess sizes?

This will work:

What are the precise cutout and recess sizes? Again, what are the tweeter hole sizes?

You will need a 2.5-way crossover. The HiVi F6 is a beautiful looking driver, and will sound decent with a proper crossover. I once designed a 2-way system with this driver for a person. I can help you with the crossover.

That is exactly what I was thinking about the woofer holes. There is a great selection of 7" woofers.

The tweeter cutout is an odd shape but the baffle was designed for a 3 5/8" speaker.

I was thinking of the Tang Band W3-315e
and the Dayton DA175-8 7" woofer

they would match and be aesthetically pleasing. Any thoughts on this combo good or bad?

The cutouts for the woofer are exactly 6.5" and the baffle is 7.75"
The tweeter cutout is an odd shape but the baffle is 3.75" .

There is no recess and only the thin black cover on the wood with the cutouts.

Those 6.5" look great but getting them in the holes would be a lot of work. I think I can add enough wood poxy to have a great seal with a 7" driver.

Why a lot of work? The HiVi F6 seems to be a perfect fit! Its frame is 7.75" and designed to be surface mounted.

You are absolutely right Jay. I thought I had looked at every woofer on that site and somehow missed that one....it's okay I'm a n00b...LOL

GREAT FIND THANKS!!

What crossover and tweeter would be a good match for that speaker and my amp combo?

The Yaqin is rated at 85watts per channel BTW.

What is the tweeter hole size again? In the above, you said 3 5/8" and 3.75". Which one is correct?

Sorry about that. The cutout for the baffle is 3 5/8". The actual cutout for the basket looks triangular and must have been made for a specific driver.

I appreciate all your help. Had another quick question. I have a few different very high quality 2-way crossovers for auto or 4ohm use. I have both CDT and Rainbow crossovers and they are a work of art.
I know this is a boneheaded question, but can I use one of those crossovers or is it just for 4ohm systems. Don't have the exact specs with me or the crossover point, just didn't even know if I can entertain the thought.

Here is a pic, aren't they beautiful...LOL...?
