I know that you cant just replace one drive unit for another, the whole speaker is designed with everything together. But is it possible or not to 'upgrade' my speaker drive units for something more expensive?

I am especially fond of the idea of replacing the D27 Vifa tweeters for something even better.

It's not that easy. It's similar to but more complicated than replacing your car tires. If everything matches like the height, width, bolt pattern and tread you can update to another made of 'better rubber'. The problem is to match all the variables before considering it. The crossover is likely to be your biggest obstacle, one that makes it difficult to find a replacement.

for a drop-in replacement, you'd need to match tweeter impedance at the crossver frequency, and efficency.
Otherwise, you'll have to start changing crossover components...
