Default Has anybody tried using the Alpha-10A or Delta-10B as dipoles?

I'm looking at cheap high-sensitivity drivers with fairly smooth response (of course) and these seem to fit the bill. However, I can't find any distortion tests of these drivers, and the impedance curves are far from smooth.

Does anybody have first-hand experience with these in the range of about 200Hz-600Hz?

Also, the Alpha-6A has both a fairly smooth response and impedance curve. Again, any opinions?

Hello,

You might try asking your question over at the Pi Speaker forum.
Wayne Parham has used these drivers extensively in many of his speaker designs.
Even though he does not offer a dipole speaker using these 10" drivers. I would think he could give you an honest opinion of their ability to be used in an OB design.

Good Luck!

Out of the speakers you have mentioned, the only driver I have any experience with is the Alpha-6, but the C version instead of the A version. The C actually looks to have a smoother response over the 200 to 600 Hz range you mentioned. A couple of weeks ago my brother brought over a pair of the Alpha-6C drivers to play with while we were waiting for glue to dry on the new OB U-baffle subs that we are building. His use for the Alpha-6C is as door speakers in his car.

We measured the Alpha6-C drivers on a large test baffle that is good down to 200Hz. During the testing we identified a couple of issues and came up with tweaks that address the issues. The 3 tweaks used were 1. 3M foam double stick mounting tape strips on the dust cap to kill the dust cap resonance, 2. Felt applied to the inside of the basket legs and flat surface outside the spider. and 3. 3M foam double stick mounting tape squares stuck to the back side of the cone to help damp out the cone resonance.

Test results, both FR and CSD along with photos of the mods are on my web page (new address and name). Look for speaker projects- Tweaking the Alpha-6C. The drivers sounded quite a bit smoother and had better resolution after the tweaks.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

About the Alpha-6x - I would use that as a mid, not from 250-600Hz. Although I am curious about a high-eff dipole with a DQ25SC, Alpha-6C, Alpha/Beta-10x, and a two-driver sub. The Beta-10CX looks good, too, though the Deltas have better sensitivity.

Darn, too late for the edit. Does anybody know how to read the impedance graph for the Alpha-6C?
