I understand that modifying the wide is a no-no, but what about the depth? Since there is a sand filled chamber at the bottom, couldn't you decrease the depth and just move the interior partition lower to keep the volume the same?
I'd email Mr. Krutke, but his FAQ spooked me.

there's nothing sacrosanct about any dimension.
keep the internal volume the same, and deal with width variation by varying the series inductor on the woofer - Martin King & Rod Elliot have good articles about this. Remember Zaph, despite his strong opinions (and they are worth heeding), often limits his options by using pre-made boxes
