DIY budget Super Tweeters

I have been trying to experiment with super tweeters without breaking the bank
I found this on eBay

Cheap Ribbons and lots of info so for very little and with lots of tweaking I ended up hearing thing on CD’s I know really well that I haven’t heard before which is what its all about for me.

Just bought 2 more Fosters Ribbons from Jaycar in Australia.
They seemed to good 2 miss (Fosters are Fostex I think)

I have another crossover design using switched capacitors and a simple attenuator. My first build used an L-pad.

I will post results in the mean while any body experimenting in this fields I would love to hear from you.

I will scan and post crossovers diagrams soon.

With HiVi selling OEM quantities of electrodynamic planars (they call them magnetostatic ribbons) for $4 USD in quantity (sans bezel) the surprise is that there aren't more showing up real cheap.

That Fountek is sure cheap... competition is making it good for us diyers.

The Foster ribbons are probably an order of quality better than the cheap ones (o'll get a chance to compare i have the Fosters & just recently got some of the HiVis)... Fostex is Fosters (little tiny) arm for selling fiy speakers (and pro gear)

Jaycar ozzie ripoff

dh,
those drivers are cheaper in England than they are in Australia, Jaycar are charging a lot more for them over here.
I have a Jaycar trade card and i can't get them for 8 pound 50.
This is probably why my Jaycar account hardly ever gets used, i prefer to support North American and European sellers as they understand the words "Competition" and "Service"
The latter word is one that very few Aussie companies can spell, much less, understand its meaning.

Jaycar Response

Hi All

Jaycar has multiple supply sites to the world. We sell our products in Australia at a competitive price and will match any other company's price with the same product. Our UK pricing is based on the exchange rate, the other factor that decreases the price is, we cannot charge Tax on an export, the receiver will have to pay the VAT at there end.

I hope this has eased any concerns about our competitiveness and service to our customers.

With all due respect

Jaycar the staff are good in most cases but Exurbia is correct, Jaycar do not even reply to emails about purchases or requests for data and in most cases prices are more than a little high.
Tyranny of distance doesn't count when the main factories are in China and Taiwan, its 18 days by ship not 8 months now.
I bought 4 of those ribbons tweeters myself, should have got Simon to buy them for me and mail them, even at the current exchange rate I would have been better off.
Regards
Ted
