woofer direction

As a woofer frequency passes below say 80 Hz us humans cannot easily perceive its directional source.
Also, at those frequencies woofer "pointing" becomes less and less significant.
Have you ever been to an audio store listening to a small set of satellite speakers with lots of bass content just realizing there is a sub-woofer running somewhere amongst the plethora of speakers on display?
Same thing.

Full range most definately as a sole tweeter will not reach 'down' far enough........plus without a midrange you will have a hole in the frequency response.
Fullrangers are an elegant solution for audio...some can get hyper expensive..but worth it.

Many bad-*** woofers can't be pointed down because of excess sag, which is unfortunate for styling purposes, as well as controlling the box walking around, and having a greater effective force (weight) to react against. But otherwise I prefer woofers be in the same location as the mains. And SL also points this out for the Pluto+, requiring the woofer be within 12 inches of the mains.

PS. You must be referring to Pluto, not Orion. Pluto+ has a proper woofer pointed down (with the mid-woofer pointed up).
