what do you mean "Most proven"
Do you mean most "popular" that still can be built with drivers currently in production?
Seems like a troll type of Q.

edit>I think your'e not asking the question you really want.
Think about what you want/need (or heard and liked) before you ask in a different way.

I wish Dave still made 1801b kits. Thats a good example of a proven design.

Since I am looking to build a pair of speakers, the drivers need to be available.

I actually am a troll, do you want to see my hump?

EDIT> what I want to do is build a very good kit speaker that many people have already built and were happy with the results. I am not looking to pave the way with an un-tested design as this will be my first project.

no, there are medical specialists that might tho :)

...but with 8 total posts and 2 thread starts today?

what about your BSC thread ie the 2way floorstander design shortend to be on stands?

I actually think his question here is a good one. I, for one, am interesting as well what people think. The last thing anybody here wants to do is to spend $1000 on drivers and crossovers only to have the result sound like crap...especially if you could have taken $1000 and purchased some well-regarded good-value commercial loudspeakers.

I think this is a good place to start:

For some of his projects, people have written in with pictures and their results. I built the Ellam and I think they're phenomenal. Definitely better than my B&W CDM-1's, which were well regarded 10 yrs ago. I'm a little skeptical about some of his designs, though, especially when he says he prefers the Vifa XT25 over the R2904 ring radiator.

P.S. I also think the OP's "other thread" about baffle step compensation was perfectly legit as well. If people here start accusing every new user as being a troll, this board isn't going to grow, is it?

FYI
Just trying to get the OP to give his opinion/and/or preferences firstly to narrow it down. For example he may not be interested in floorstanders or maybe he wants a small 2 way nearfield monitor. Most proven DIY speaker at under $xxx with no other requirement for room/enviroment, music type, source equipment, and past experience is way too ambiguous. Besides the BEST this or that , I really think is non productive discussion and leads to chaos> there is no BEST just tradeoffs given the requirements.
I called his Question a troll not him personally. Just helping him focus a bit more.

Building my first pair of monitors and looking for the most proven design available. Speakers can cost up to $1,500, but I am more interested in the most proven crossover and cabinet design.

What would you guys build for a first project if you were to do it all again?
Build the ZMV5, just to learn the ropes. Then you can delegate them as surrounds and move onto a higher-quality pair as the fronts.

As I have no idea what your experience is, nor do I know what your expectations are. I'll give you my recommendation as to the best speaker kit that is currently available (IMHO).

If you want it all and are prepared to do the cabinets, then take a look at the Exodus Audio "Kepler" speaker kit and their Shiva-X subwoofer. For your $1500, you can end up with a killer set-up that will not be embarassed by any speaker system costing many times more. The "Kepler" and the Shiva-X use SOTA XBL2 motors that have less distortion than just about any woofer systems currently available and the Peerless tweeter is as good sounding as any.

I've got a pair of the Keplers and they're my new reference.

Here's a review of the Keplers (with measurements) that you can read:

I am still deciding what I want to do for a first project. After finding out that a change in the height of the cabinet will affect BSC, I decided to scrap my plans to modify the cabinet because I didn't want to have to modify the crossover too.

Back to the drawing board, or rather the message board to find some new ideas.

I think Terrys suggestion is a good one

Have anyone tried this neat and compact classical 3way http://www.geocities.com/cc00541/Statements_Monitor.html

From what I can read, they claim them to maybe be even better than the his bigger "Statement"

But point is that whatever some people might think of a design, it may not be to your liking, as we all have different sets of preference
Its hard to imagine that every one of all the designs out there all sound different...but I believe it actually is so
AND your setup and listening room WILL react differently than any other, so its really not that easy

I have to say that Troels G and Humble Home made HiFi both in Denmark I believe, have the most extensive and well documented
DIY loudspeaker sites out there.

The hardest part about building and choosing the right DIY loudspeaker is you really dont know how it will perform with your components and room acoustics.

I'm actually selling my CNO monitors built from Troels G site, just the drivers and built crossovers.
Only to fund a much larger project based on similar SEAS excel divers.

These drivers are amazing, pricey but worth it if the crossover is done right and with quality components, mainly the caps. These speakers blow away my previous Monitor Audio GS-10's.

My stuff is for sale in the trading post.

So what was wrong with them that causes you to go to bat again.
Do want more SPLs and Bass perhaps? The sky is the limit with active EQ and subs.

Nothing wrong with the set-up I have, just looking for something
different.

Just experiementaion basicly,a dedicated midrange, bass driver
possible external crossover.
All that said,I'm still thingking"should I really try something else?"

I'm quite happy with these monitors, the more I listen to them
the better they get.
