I have been an advocate of this kind of thing all along. But i firmly believe that if you start with a "midrange" that by itself can give you a musical system then you are way ahead of a typical multi-way system... the XO(s) can be pushed out to where they are much less objectionable.

My big Fostex system has fonkenWoof with 2 SDX7 XOed at 100 Hz to FonkenPrime with FE127eN. I have been playing with supertweeters up above 15k, i haven't gotten far enuff to decide whether they'd be missed.

With Tysen the little "FR" extends well beyond 20 k (Fostex spec 32k), and bottom down below 40, and imagine like crazy (but then so does the big system)

Llistening to stock Fostex in no way reveals how good these drivers can be.

Hard to say it better than that.

Cheers

These are just outside your budget by a bit. Not a full range and not multi-way, but a nice compromise maybe?.. You would be one of the first to try them though if you went this route.. http://www.greatplainsaudio.com/downloads/212_8A.pdf Dave

all kinds of music, classical, 80's, jazz, blues, metal..

imho you'll never miss a tweeter with the Alapir5 (or the A6), frequency extends far beyond 20kHz and directivity is not a problem as it is with the larger FRs
and with a woofer like the SDX7 in a TL you'll certainly never need a subwoofer for music.

the Tysen concept might just be what you are looking for...

Anyone tried a design like this, with all same small FR...wwmtm

Only 2 inductors fore 300/1khz 6db lowpass is used...but maybe also a 1khz 6db highpass on "tweeter" driver
