Pioneer cs 77 speaker c., 1969

I got these in Hong Kong in 1969. I am thinking of using them as dual subs, with small 2 way on top, maybe Zaph's ZBM4. I am looking for new 10-12" drivers to replace whats in them now. I want to drive them with a Pioneer xs 990 reciever from the same era. This would be from my PC sound analog out, on the sub channel; so, just 90 hz , or so, down. I have 28w @8ohms or 30w @4ohms, must be efficient. The enclosures are about 1.8cf gross, sealed.

This is for music, in my 12x 16 male bonding room(no WAF here). She put them in the attic 10yrs back and I thought they were gone til I found them last month.

Suggestions on a driver, $25-50?

Efficient + low power + acoustically small cab = no bass or low peak SPL capability or some combination of the two.

Assuming a wide bandwidth (BW) is preferable to high peak SPL capability, then find the lowest Fs driver you can that has a Qts around 0.38 - 0.4 and a Vas = 3x the cab's net internal volume (Vb) to get a classic acoustic suspension (AS) alignment.

Note that while I make no attempt at keeping up with the plethora of drivers available, I imagine only junk drivers with little linear excursion (Xmax) or possibly manufacturer's over-stock is available in your price range, so I'm guessing browsing closeout sales is your best bet if no one else chimes in with more concrete suggestions. Another possibility might be dropping down to the high excursion 8" 'sub' drivers.

Spectral Tilt in a sub Plate amp???

I was perusing SL's site reading about his Pluto and variations when I saw mention of a Peerless SLS 10" 8 ohm driver that seems to be ideal for my Pioneer cs 77 cabs. and it only cost $56. SL's approval is good enough for me.

Unibox shows it to work well in a 48L box, as I have, with 55 watts of power.

I plan to drive two, in parallel and in seperate boxes with one of the NHT surpplus sale Foster Plate Amps I got at Augerpro's suggestion. Seems to me that its 115 watts into 4 ohms will work out great. But one of the big fetchers is SPECTRAL TILT ???

"Foster subwoofer plate amplifier. 115W into 4ohms, 80W into 8ohms. 4th order (24dB/octave) low pass adjustable from 50-200Hz. 0-180 degree phase switch, RCA and speaker level inputs, volume control. Unit has a 3rd order (18dB/octave) high pass filter at 29Hz with a Q of 0.707 built into the subwoofer section. Can easily be modified for any Q and cutoff frequency that you want by changing R615, R617, R618, C607, C608 and C609. The amplifier also has a spectral tilt control that is adjusted to give about 10dB of shelving. It can be manually adjusted with a pot on the PCB. See response curves linked below. I dont know what that is but I bet it is important in this case. Augerpro is adsorbed with his new site and driver testing now, and will get around to explaining it to me when he catches up, but you know what curiosity did to the cat and expiring is to be avoided.

So can anyone else explain what I have here?

I wanted this for music, crossed over high, say 125-200hz, for small speakers. Integration is to be helped by two separate boxes. Zaph recommends this and Geddes. As is, at 55 watts Unibox shows an f3 of 48hz, in 48L sealed, and max of 98db at 30hzs. Sounds great to me in my 250 sf listening room. I plan to pair them with 5 of Zaph's ZBM4s in a 5.1 setup eventually and also Augerpro's BoseBusterIII, which is in the making. I want to experiment with SCAD, and really small speakers.
