I've noticed that one of the drivers on my speakers (Royd Doublet, 1995) has started to produce a small amount of distortion. CLoser inspection revealed that part of the voice coil seems to be chaffing against the central magnet.
There is no dust cap, by design.
I am tempted to simply use a set of fine needles and physically bend the chaffing part of the VC sorround away from the magnet.
Any thoughts/comments?

Try unmounting the woofer and turn it 180 deg. Gravity might solve the problem with the chafing voicecoil.
I had a similar, but much more serious problem with a pair of ATC 15" woofers.
If the chafing is due to overexcursion then the VC could be deformed by contact with the back plate. This could mean serious damage to the VC along with a nonliniear performance.
