Default Eminence Kappalite15LF for OB?

Looks like a good candidate for and OB with a 1" compression driver crossed at 1k. I'm thinking 2 15"s with a single 1 inch waveguide mounted horn, 4 channels of amplificaton and active XO/eQ. Any thoughts??

You might want to look at the other Eminence 15s for OB - not only way cheaper, but more suited, due to higher Qts, for OB use.

15s is the plural of 15, meaning other Eminence 15-inch speakers. The two that I have had are the Delta 15LF and the Alpha 15. If you do a search here or on the Audio Circle Open Baffle forum, you can get all kinds of info. - Pat

I was considering the Kappalite for its healthy Xmax and frequency response to 1k, as compared to the other eminence 15s it seems like a better choice. I've read about Qts being as close to 50 or better as a rule of thumb, but never really lloked for an explanation as to why. Any Help?

There must be a good reason why Emerald CS2 do not use the Kappa but Alphas . They too cut them very high at 1kHz.

The only advantage i can find between the two for the Alpha is price? The kappas FR is smoother, cast frame, double the xmax, higher sensitivity.........other than Qts.

I just re-read your original post, and I see that you are planning on biamping and EQing. In that case, you can use the brute force approach to OB and simply pour on the power and low-frequency EQ to make these speakers work. Heck, Linkwitz even made the Peerless XLS work for OB.

On the other hand, if that is going to be the approach, you can expand your search to include many, many more woofers that meet your criteria for construction, xmax, and sensitivity, and perhaps still fit into your $740 budget. Good luck with the project, and keep us posted.

The Alphas are very attractive at the price, but considering a DIY budget versus a CS2 purchase, the Kappalight may hold more value in overall, and i may be overthinking the 1K XO as the problem area, where the Kappa seems to have an advantage. Maybe 4 Alphas per side would be the wiser choice. Now i'm really torn!

One camp says Xmax, the other high Qts..who's correct?
