Default Looking for a 2-way design

Using Excel W22 (8") Nextel coated driver - anyone know of any out there?

Thanks!

Do you already own these drivers? Though not unheard of there are not a lot of 2-ways out there with 8" woofers - most people stop at 7.

There are several great designs at www.zaphaudio.com with 7" woofers, many of them SEAS. Worth a look if you haven't already.

thanks for reply -
I do not own the drivers, but my last build was a 7" 2way (Dayton RS180's and B&G Neo3), and am looking for something a little more dynamic, and the Nextel drivers have always intrigued me.
I know a (much) cheaper option would be Mark K.'s RS225/RS28 build (on audioheuristics.org), but since it can be done with a metal driver I'm sure it'd be even easier to do with the Nextel driver.

Seems to me like that 8" nextel woofer may have potential in a 2.5way, but I dont know of any
In a straight 2way I am not so sure

Anyway, I somehow doubt you will get the expected dynamic just by going from 6.5" to 8" woofer/mid, maybe a bit more, but not really significant

But this new design from Troels would

Hah, yes, I saw that design. Very nice, but more work than I want to do

I know it's not a huge difference in diamater, but realize that it's almost double SD - that's pretty significant.

Mark's design is cheaper but lots of crossover components so that will add up. I also wonder what porting it with a larger enclosure would do.

At any rate a 2.5-way is a good idea to get those additional dynamics you're looking for - with either 7" or 8" woofers.

Have you thought of experimenting with crossover software to see if your idea will work well? (I say "well" because I'm sure it will work - just depends on the tweeter you mate it with and other variables, crossover design, etc.)

Well, I would accept if you were saying "too expencive or no room", but "too much work", no way

But apart from that, better dynamics could be many others things than just a bigger driver
But if its only more and deeper bass, then a sub may do it

If you really wanna go easy, a fullrange, big or small, with a sub, could appear like more dynamic, just an option...works nicely with some kinds of music like the acoustic kind, but less good with others like heavy metal

Fore the heavy stuff and blues music, the big coaxes may be nice

"big coaxials"? I'm intrigued... what are you referring to?

Oh, and I am NOT paying $335 for a tweeter... so yes, that is too expensive

Sorry to say that I dont know of any properly finished designs, so crossovers could still be a problem

But you can look up RADIAN and P.AUDIO at US SPEAKER

The luxury driver would be from GreatPlainsAudio(Altec) http://www.greatplainsaudio.com/two_way.html

Hiraga seems to like them http://www.jean-hiraga.com/index.html

Though mind you, I am really very uncertain which type to prefer...with or without the small horn...but my guts say NO horn as the attached horn seems to be rather small to do any good...but I really have no experience with those things

But someone in here surely must have tried them...maybe make a dedicated coax thread, and you may stirr up one or two with the knowledge I think Panomaniac have been speaking highly of a 15"

Just been looking at the P.Audio, and straight from the hips I would say the BM-12CXA...and my main reason fore that is the highish Qts of 0.41, which should give some nice bass, in light of the also higfhish Fs..and wow, its 100db SPL...that should rock the house

btw, you could also take a look at Summa kits http://www.gedlee.com/Summa.htm

Yes, I do keep going back to Dr Geddes' kits, they might be just what I'm looking for.

I am currently using a subwoofer, but the area that I'm looking for more "presence" in is a bit higher, maybe 100-300hz mid-bass area. Most music sounds fine (even heavy metal), but orchestras/symphonies just sound too... small? Perhaps i need to look into a multi-driver 3 way instead, although my room is only 9 x 12 so I don't have a huge area to fill.
