You may want to review Mr. Klippel's work. he not only has figured out how to detect distortion, compression etc, but also a way to ciorrect the signal to keep the speaker just below the trouble area and giving out max output.

Certainly you can just use accelerometer feedback (or a microphone inside the enclosure) and analyse the feedback signal...How about making a signal processor which grooms the signal to enable the speaker to play with low distortion? This is an extension of your idea to have something like a variable highpass filter as signal level increases - to reduce excursion requirements - which reduces distortion.

This way, when the system is played at high volume, it has progressively less bass - and since bass travels the furthest, it would mean a double positive of less distorted sound and less annoyance for others...I think this would be good for boombox manufacturers, as long as their amp power was less than the woofer thermal limit they would have fewer blown drivers and warranty returns and perhaps develop a reputation for reliability...but perhaps most manufacturers would rather sell another boombox

Philips did something like this with their early cassette noise reduction

Bose do this in the acoustimass module that saves the satelites from being overdriven via light bulbs. A youtube can show you this in action. Other benefit is beat activated lighting with the top off so you can party on down.
