I rescued some speaker boxes from the dump, big heavy boxes with crossovers and a single 12" in each. The 12s were missing their now disintegrated foam surrounds, but look interesting. They have large alnico magnets, and are marked "Custom by CTS". The part number on the cone has been marked out and replaced with a new one. The baskets are marked "Custom Design By CTS. 12R-16-8 137 7212" Cones marked 1271-3. 1275-1 is marked out. Very large voice coil, measure around 7.5 ohms DCR. Does anyone have any idea as to whether these might be any good? Are they "full range" or more bandwidth limited? The cones are smooth, so I assume (perhaps wrongly) that they are probably for 5k and below, maybe lower.
Thanks! |

Hrmmm. I know there's a CTS that specializes mainly in guitar speakers, I think. And cheap piezo tweeters, but I'm not sure if that's the same company as the guitar speakers. Not sure if either of those are the same company as your 12" drivers, either. If it wouldn't be too difficult for you to take a couple photos, you might want to consider it. People on here like photos, and it might lead to some helpful answers.

Hi,
You say the boxes have crossovers, they can tell you a lot, and presumably further cutouts, presumably for tweeters. Your best assumption is the crossovers suit the driver, though of course you can use a more restricted range. /sreten.
