I want to build bass units for my mini monitors (http://www.avforums.co.za/index.php/topic,2060.0.html).
I am after clean, well defined bass that extends as low as possible without compromising musicality. The drivers that I am looking at include: Silver Flute W20RC38 (or the 4ohm version) @ 36.80 HiVi M8a @ $56 Peerless 830667 @ $52.75 Seas CA22RNX (H1288) @ $87.75 (very expensive!) All of them appears can go down to 30-32 Hz (except maybe to Silver Flute). Which one would you recommend? The idea is to cross between 200 - 400Hz (haven't done ANY design yet). The bass drivers will be in their own enclosures with the mini monitors sitting on top. I realize that the drivers are not all in the same league but they won't be used in their full range capacity. Are the CA22's worth their price in bass only application? I'd appreciate your suggestions. Regards, Gerhard |

The M8a is very well regarded when used below its breakup, which you would be in your application. I have one in a sub and it can produce very clean bass. They also look great, especially when set in to the baffle as they are designed to be. Would look nice with your lovely monitors
See the M8a excursion in my vid here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBhDC6fYI6Q Its remarkebly clean for quite a basic motor. The cone is exceptional apparently. |

What about the Dayton RS225S-8 @ $55.11?

That would also be very good. With your low crossover point that should produce similar results to the M8a. Up higher I believe the Dayton's breakup is less controlled. The Dayton may actually have a lower distortion motor and appears to have more Xmax. This might be worth looking at:

I did look at that, hence the suggestion
It is a toss-up between the Dayton and the HiVi it seems. All else being equal I'd go for the Dayton because it is black (I don't know about that orange |

You wouldn't want to paint them, they are really attractive in real life

Don't forget about the offerings from TB. I have had good luck with the 6.5" version of this neo unit

My favorite 8" at the moment is the CSS SDX7. Needs a bit of tweaking to clean up the kevlar but performs more like you'd expect from a larrger driver. Works well in a sealed box. More expensive thou than any of your candidates.
We have been playing with the 5" Silver Flute as an inexpensive alternative -- for the money very good, the 8 is on the radar to play with in the future. Even 200 Hz sounds a bit high to XO unless you are going for shear volume levels. You going to go active for this XO? dave
