I have read that cathedral builders in England had maintenance plans for their buildings that looked ahead for many centuries, and they actually planted groves of oaks to provide lumber for the future maintenance needs several generations later. That's the sort of thinking we could use a lot more of today.

<OT>

And they had the bad habit of trying to surpass eachother with the height of the central tower, causing massive statical problems for the forthcoming generations. Almost everyone either collapsed, had to be rebuilt, needed reinforcement for the pillars or is causing minor problems up to now.

Never be too uncritical in praising the good old times.

FYI, Thanh's speakers are an interpretation of my NaO II design. The woofers were build so as to operate only in sealed box mode and he has taken a little liberty with the treatment behind the baffle.

Thanh, I think you need to finish them so I can get a picture to post on my site. Can't have no sagging electical tape hanging off the edges. :)

By the way Thanh, did you ever get around to trying the transformation of the Thor to a NaO II like system with W18 drivers using the crossover I send you for a W18/T25 panel?

This is interesting idea ... John, would you prefer W18's over 8545 in MTM ? Shame I can't find any NaO's in Melbourne to listen to. I did like Orions very much, but I'm simply afraid they just won't have the oomph for my space. And I simply can't justify adding subs (what's that, 10 or 12 channel amplification). NaOs with its option to seal the U frame could be the answer (as well as adding the spl in midrange by doubling the area, and relieving the tweeter by shifting crossover point higher).
Off topic, I know ... sorry

Bratislav,

Your thoughts echo mine. You may also notice that my cabinet is a 2-piece design. But this is increasingly OT. If interested, pop me an email.

John,
I have no urge to build the NaO 2T-AEP. But for the sake of comparison, I'll give it a go sometime this December.
I've got 6 weeks of leave. This time, no veneers, and no need to try to beautify the cabinets. A tombstone in good ol' paint will do it.

Which will be better? Steinway or Fazioli? Ferrai or Porsche?

I prefer Fazioli, and Porsche. But you'll probably hear from me in January for another order of an Active Crossover unit.

regards,
Thanh.

Well, I' a Ferrari guy ('85 308 GTB original owner). But you are correct. The original NaO came in both flavors (SS or W18 mids) but I always preferred the SS version because for me the lower midranges sounded more natural. Thus the NaO II was limited to the SS flavor.

I am considering reintroducing a W18 version simple because there may be others who build the Thor and are disappointed with the result. With a little additional investment they could uses the Thor driver set in a NaO II - AEP. As you know, I redesigned the passive crossover for the W18 mids so that they can be used without modification to active crossover/equalization unit. (The original AEP version required changes in the active circuits.) If I do reintroduce the W18 version it will only be in hybrid format. There will not be an all active version.

There was, early on, a W18/27TDFC, sealed box woofer version:

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Well I can rest easy now and just enjoy listening to music. All the old favourites as well as new music.

But apart from the gimmicks at RMAF, I like to look at audio porn just like everyone else.

Did anyone come across a music server with ripping cability, 1TB silent storage, expandable by eSATA? I'm thinking of an all in one unit equivalent to a Transporter + NAS + CD drive

Did anyone hear Phil Bamberg's big bi-amped 3 way,
or the system driven by the big Aussie Halcro amps & DEQX units?

regards,
Thanh.

Interesting, thanks Jan.

But what happened to the other 158 exhibitions? :D

There's a listing in the catalog;)

No, seriously, I don't enjoy doing 20 rooms in an hour, rooms that often are interchangeable concerning the sound. It's horrendous, how often bad recordings are used to demo equipment. I try to pick up some interesting stuff and also the undercurrent trends and discussions.
