It's not really capable of quadrupling power output, power output is dictated by the capabilities of the output devices. An amp will be for example 2x100 into 4 ohms or 1x200 into 8 ohms, i.e. same total power.
What it does achieve is that you can drive higher impedance loads to high power and/or make better use of device safe operating area or voltage limits.

Hi JLO,
Using Yamaha SP2060 or BSS 366 numeric processors : for example, having a driver with an initial resonance of f and Qt = 1, setting the PEQ at f for a Q = 1 (bandwidth 1.388) and gain to -6.02 dB changes the apparent Q at f of the driver to 0.5. A bit further work can also change the resonance frequency à la Linkwitz transform. Beware that the Q value of some processors (Behringer, RAM Audio) seem to differ from those above. See the picture for an amplifier with negative output resistance, it uses a bootstrap of the input by a voltage proportional to the current in the voice-coil. Even more simple, fig # 7 of this link http://ddata.over-blog.com/xxxyyy/1/...ack_Ch2_M2.pdf Caution : when testing, have over-current protections. |
