Default Woofer and port position

I'm building some speaker boxes this weekend and there's one thing I can't remember : Where do I put the woofer and port?

I read the Weems book and made my plans years ago, but only got the panels cut recently.

What's the law again? The (front) port's center is placed at 1/5th vertically, and the woofer's center is at 1/3rd, both horizontally centered?

I don't think there's any 'law' for this, two things to consider are what looks good, and whether you are using room gain. If you want room gain the woofer will need to be low. Personally, I don't like this, I like the box to do the work down to the mid 30's and have the woofer and port high, as close to the mid as practicable. Some like to put the port on the back because mids can be reflected out of the port (of course this is no good if the speakers will be close to a wall), some damping on the surface behind the port can fix this for a front firing port.

Found a bit of info again, placing things at the 3rd and 5th is supposed to cancel out some box resonance at these harmonics.
