The are probably the most popular and thus most critiqued speaker in the history of DIY loudspeakers. But despite everything that's been said about them, I think they still serve as a reference DIY speaker that has great bass and musicality.

As a starter project it's hard to go wrong with either of these. Your next project will have to cost serious $$$, or be seriously large to outperform either of these.
