Help to understand digital crossovers

Hi All,

I'm trying to understand digital crossovers as a replacement for passive.

Can I use a device like the ULTRADRIVE PRO DCX2496 to replace a passive crossover? If I knew the crossover points? Obviously with abit of re-wiring etc.

The ans is yes, I bought mine (DCX2496)6 months ago, it is VERY easy to drive, NO worry.

You will learn how to drive in a flash, or not quite, at least 0.5-1hr really. It is user friendly just interface it with a PC it is much easier, also use the digital input ie interface with the CD coaxial.

If you run into trouble email me I will give you a hand.

You can buy it locally from Ebay(melb shore) for less than $450.

I have the Behringer analog as well but DCX digital makes a lot of difference.

Hi,

the correct answer to Your Q is NO! You need to know more than just the crossover points, since every passive crossover works as crossover as well as equalizer at the same. So You should know exactly what the passive Filter is doing (Fo, Q, etc. etc). This can be easily measured at the connectors of the driver. If You know the amplitude and phase response of the electrical network than the answer to Your Q is Yes. You can ´copy´ the passive filter´s response with such a digital device. There will probabely still be slight sonic differences, but it will be up to You to decide whcih kind of ´drive´ You prefer.

The DCX2496 is flexible enough to do it.

Whether it makes any sense depends on the loudspeaker .....

my short answer is:- Yes.
My longer answer is:- only with a lot of work and understanding can you even approach what a good passive designer has achieved.

I failed with my first 8week attempt and have temporarily retired it till I have time to modify and invest real effort into equaling the performance of the passive crossover in my AE1.

maybe one should consider the volume control. you either do it digitally, which compromises sound quality, or you dial in the volume at each power amp seperately.

To replace a passive crossover by an active one is not a trivial task, there are many more parameters to set up than just the crossover points. The digital crossover is up to the job of doing the filtering, but are you up to the job of adjusting it? In the end it may be a funny learning adventure, though.

Not trying to derail this thread, but since quite a number of ppl here at this forum obviously defines themselves as true audiophiles at connosieurs at heart, ( aren't we all-- ;-) )
how does this Behringer unit stand up to the "High End" definition - if such a definition really exists.............

High end only makes sense for the kind of people that pay for black-box type audio components, without an objective understanding of what is inside. It's not likely to make any sense among the people capable of designing optimum crossovers (except for the ones that actually design high end, but they are likely to understand it just as a business).
