Question OPEN BAFFLE QUERY for Aussies

I just bought a pair of Magnavox 8WR speakers as a whim, they cost me a dollar.
I have in the shed a panel of MDF 1220 X 450 and enough scrap to add wings about 300 deep.
I also have 2 pair of "Jaycar" 12 inch paper cone woofers, I know that the stated power handling of the Jaycars is optimistic but the Magnavox will probably take 15-20 watts if I remove some of the bass and send most of the LF to the 12 inch woofers.
I am actually surprised at how nice the Magnavox sound even if a little ragged. As a dedicated mid they may sound a little better.
I'm asking for a little help with a simple crossover to suit this combination of drivers and baffle.
They will be a gift for friends and I have spent as much as I can really afford so I'm hoping I can use what have in stock as far as inductors and caps go.
Will a second order at around 200 be OK???

I've also toyed with a pair of 16ohm 8WR's.
Wanting a bit more sparkle, I added a piezo supertweeter, using a cap for a 1st order XO.
I used an L-pad on the piezo.
No too bad.

cheers

Doug

PS, did you see the 8WR's in the open-rear cabinet on fleaBay?

Hi Doug, these were in a small 19litre sealed box and they are the 8Ohm version, I'll add a super tweeter if I need to.
These were from Ebay but pick-up in Melbourne

I've not tried them with a subwoofer. I really liked them as a single driver. The point-source thing. Just wanted a bit of sizzle on top. I don't think they'll be metal rock speakers, but with Ricki-Lee Jones singing live on "Naked Songs" ... :-)

*** What if you got a second pair of 8WR's and set them as a 1.5?
ie close together vertically on the baffle, with the lower one a first-order low-pass?
Maybe enough bass without trying to blend two completely different drivers ...

?

"2nd order L/R at 200?? " - I used 1st order at around 150 and didn't have a problem (3mH and 150uF), but 2nd order's only a couple of extra parts, try both...

Hi Peter, that was my initial thought.
OK I'll try first on the woofer, second on the full range ( I have 3mH on the shelf, if I use standard values for the second order and use the 9mH coil I have, then that should be close enough for trial listening.
And if I need some top end sparkle I'd add that later

Default More 8WR's on fleaBay ...

Another pair of 8WR's have just appeared on fleaBay (Melbourne).
... if you wanted to try the 1.5 route ...

cheers

Doug
