In my everlasting quest for decent studio monitors I came across this photo.
It shows the inside of a comersial studio monitor made by event electronics. It is to be noted that this is one of their better models. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr0...internal.l.jpg Now I just have to find a good threeway and build it myself.

Interesting way to get more port length. Can't say I haven't been tempted to try it. What do you propose is wrong with this monitor? Does it have a reputation for sounding bad or failing prematurely?

To be honest I don't see much wrong with it. If it's build sturdily and the drivers are good, what's the problem?
Admittedly the ports look a bit tacky. |

Because of the economics of bringing a manufactured product to market - At the best ALL the materials comprise 20 - 25% of the final cost.
It looks like a very simple driver ( no vented pole piece ) The wiring is loose ( cable ties are very cheap after all ) Bending ports is acceptable. I have Focals with bent ports I have never heard of corrugated pipe being used ( too much air turbulence ) What is on the board ( at bottom left )? All in All this is why DIY exists. Performance is based upon sweat equity and your budget - Not a need to make a profit |

Thats an active speaker, what u see are the power supply capacitors., look carefully and u can see a power transformer in the box just below the opening, the little orange thing.

I did this with a subwoofer, but found the pipes to be to turbulent, and pingy. We solved it by taking some sound wool, and wrapping it around the port and zip tying it.
Lowered the Q of the port more aperiodic style, but it really quieted the ports. |

wow kinda surprising what they put in these new monitors, i have a set of event 2020s and to be honest they aren't made half as cheaply as their new offerings, they're passive by the way. i'm still happy with their sound, they are currently in my work shop, very relaxed listening, price wasn't bad either. havent heard any speakers in this price range sound the same, just my experience!

Nothing like a bit of drain flow for a vent! I wonder if it was punched drain flow, that might reduce the turbulence in the vent. They've probably patented it as a form of aperiodic loading

I especially like the piece of string that's holding the vent pipe in place.
