Default Why High Spl

Warning n00b question

Why do builders aim for high spl?
A normal speaker with 83db sensitivity sounds plenty loud to me.

If those low sensitivity speakers had the same linearity as those of high sensitivity ones, then it'd be OK. However that's never the case.

Less thermal compression and the ability to do realistic transient and peak levels.

Default Power

Interesting to note. Every 3db increase in volume requires a doubling of amplifier power.

and conversely, every 3dB increase in sensitivity requires half the input power.
i.e. 93dB speakers require only one tenth the power input of 83dB speakers.
