Default Please advice me on this project

Hi everybody.

Did a search and found nothing relevant,,, maybe it's me being thick,,,

First off, I'm a total noob when it comes to speakers,,, I'm not even sure this post is in the right section of the forums. So, mods, please bear with me. If you need to delete the post by all means do it,,,

I'm in need of a bass cab,,, and I need to cut thru about 5 tons of guitars so I need a very powerful one.
I need the cab to go from about 30-50Hz up to 10000+ and I don't need a perfectly flat response,,, just reasonable, I don't need it for an hi fi system.

I found this woofer and this driver,,,

in my head with these two I could have a relatively small cab [1x12" + driver with horn] with a more than decent output [the woofer has 750Wrms with 91dB and the driver does 150Wrms but has 107dB and that's a LOT more than the woofer].

Now the questions:

1-is the driver powerful enough to complement the woofer in terms of volume? will I need to put 2 or more drivers to complement?
2-I wanna build the crossover myself, I normally use resistors and caps in my tube guitar amps [600+ volts rating for the caps 1W the resistors], are those ok for a crossover or I need something different with such big power? maybe with a high current rating?
3-I used this tool to determine the cabinet for the woofer,,, but what do I need to use for a 2 way system like this?

again, I'm a total noob so please bear with me and thanx in advance,,,

You'll probably destroy that woofer with a bass guitar; You need a driver that is designed for pro-audio - with a corrugated surround, not rubber, and high efficiency, 97-100 dB.

Consider building your cabinet as a wedge, so the speaker is pointing at your ears, not your knees...

something like this:

Although I'd go for an 8 ohm woofer, so you can add a second cab later...

thx mate,,,

why would it be destroyed? that woofer is in the pro section of their catalog so I assumed it was ok,,,

the PW320 is 150Wrms,,, I really can't do anything with such power,,,

Hi,

The 12" would be fine in a practise / acoustic bass amplifier but it
is simply not loud enough for use with a 150W amplifier for rock.

If you want half decent bass and volume you cannot have small
cabinets - unless you have oodles of (class D ?) power available.

Two 8 ohm cabinets are the way to go for flexibility, use one
or both as required noting 2 will go ~ 6dB louder than a single.

Presuming 15"'ers, they need to be 8 ohm and > 97dB/W.
Go for lots of midrange, can be knocked back at the amplifier.

I would not be too precious about a tweeter, you can add this
to one of them with a level control (and crossover). Being able
to purchase spare diaphragms for it is always a good idea.
Run the 15's full range and choose it to come in as they roll off.

thx sreten,

yeah, as I stated before, 150wrms is not even taken into account,,, I need at least 400 watts.

the amp I plan to use has 2x700 watts at 2ohm and 1400 watts bridged,,, should be enough

this would go with an ampeg SVT replica tube preamp,,,

do you have opinions about the first option I exposed in my first post? the 12" 750Wrms woofer with the 150Wrms driver? the woofer does 91dB but it has 750 watts which is pretty high,,, also the bass reflex cab I calculated has a resonant freq around 30-40 Hz so should have about decent bass,,,

They play an important role in listening music ,it is of no use if removed.

Hi,

Noting in real watts its around 88dB and the midrange is not
very hot, the depression is bad, and after rolling off the peak .....

Around 1 cuft / 28L tuned to 40Hz will peak out around 115db
midband - which a 98dB/W 15" would equal with around 50W.

So the 700w up the jacksy is not giving you all that,
except good low bass power and decent extension.

Personally I think (i do not know) it would not sound that good.
Depends on the live sound you want. A bass cabinet is not a PA
cabinet, can progressively distort a lot more, all part of the sound.

what do you mean with "Noting in real watts"?
[sorry but english ain't my first language]

so you suggest a 15" uh? will have to try and look for a nice one off of the same catalog,,,

also, could you please shed some light about the crossover issues I pointed out in my first post?

many thanx mate,,,
