For "high end reference level" I'd stick with the 2-ways here.

Yes the 7" designs are rather large - a ported ZD5 should work well, with just a taller/deeper enclosure to accomodate the needed volume.

From the research that i had done i was / am leading towards the ZD5. It's smaller enclosure definitely appeals to me and it has been very well documented.
I will definitely dig through the threads in this speaker, but as a heads up have any of you built this speaker and made subsequent modifications, either in terms of enclosure size and or crossover components.
It appears that Zaph is always spot on in his documentation but it has been a couple ofyears since this speaker was first published.
I remember reading somewhere that Zaph was absolutely insistent on maintaining the 7" baffle width.

Thanks for the great feedback

Probably the only person who could improve the ZD5 is Zaph himself.

Several people here have built the ZD5 - the threads should be easy to find.

You mentioned crossover components rather than crossover design - no changes will yield an audible difference, but if cost is easy poly caps are an option, as they will maintain their values over longer periods of time.
