Default Kappa 15

Hello all,

I just bought a pair of Eminence Kappa 15 speakers my mistake thinking they were Alpha 15. I was hoping to do some experiments with an OB setup but the Qts on these seem slightly lowfor the Kappas. On the other hand some people say that the very high Qts of the Alphas dont make them the best solution for OB.

So now since I have the Kappas I figure I might as well use them, plus they look really nice.
How well do you OB gurus think that this woofer will work in OB setup?
Im not looking for a lot of deep bass since I have a sub, I just want clean bass.

What do you think???

Thanks all.

Thanks all.

Have you thought about a folded horn enclosure ?
I have made a couple, one using an Eminence 15 and the other a Fane Collossus 18 inch and they put out some serious bass.

I am sure you could do a better job than mine.
I dont have the tools to make a glued cabinet hence the huge bracing pieces in the box.

Hello lawbadman......

OK.... quick questions.....

How many of the Kappa do you plan to use per side... one or two?

Are you intending to do an all passive system... or use active crossovers? Or plate amp on the Kappa's with passive on top?

What is the largest diameter baffle you can tolerarte?

What kind of bass extension do you need? 50 hz ...40 hz...30 hz?

How big of room and how loud do you want to play.... basically what is .... or was your design game plan....

All the above need to be decided... then you can work with what you have......

Look forward to seeing your thoughts.. and based on your answers can send you off in a viable direction. BTW... been at this for a lot of years....

John

???

Whether you using screws, nails or whatever, just put on the glue before you combine two pieces of wood?

@lawbadman: No ID about OB but a closed box (~63 liter/2.2 cubic ft.) should do.

Regards Johan

Response will be similar to the datasheet.

I dont think I want to build a horn, they are too big. This will be for my bedroom system. But I think that I will build a box for them when I play for parties, other than that I want an OB system.

John Bsuch, here are some of my goals.

I only plan to use one Kappa per side.
I want to go the bi-amped route. I can build active crossovers and amps as I need them so thats not a problem.
Largest baffle width I would guess can be about 25 inches, I might go more if needed.
Bass can go down to 40Hz, but if I can go lower without getting too big thats fine.
The size of my room is about 25x25 with a very high ceiling.
Being loud is not critical but would be nice.

ok John what kind of magic do you have up your sleeve?

Alpha-15A versus Kappa-15A. Both on 2 ft wide by 4 ft tall OB's, both 1 meter from rear and side walls.
Expect real-world response to be fairly similar to the simulations shown..

So everyone is going crazy over OBs with a response like that???? Or is there heavy eq used to smooth out the freq. resp? Or does it sound great like that?

Of course it does not sound great like that.

The posted responses look like "raw" responses of drivers - but you more or less always need some EQ for OB - higher Qts means less EQ necessary. If passive EQ s needed, you're pretty much stuck with high Qts drivers - the Kappas don't look too good there.
