Thought experiment ... chip-amped active line arrays?

With the advent of relatively cheap class D (Tripath) power amp boards ...

for example, see cgi.ebay.com.au/2-15-watt-4ohm-TA2024-D-class-Audio-Amplifier-Board_W0QQitemZ350073355327QQihZ022QQcategoryZ39783QQcmdZViewItem

... what is everyone's opinion about a proposal to have an active line array, with individual drivers, or perhaps groups of drivers, powered by these amps.

If the aim output was suitably modest in aggregate, the chip amps could be driven well inside their low-distortion zone, and all you would need to arrange would be a good 12VDC supply to each board. (Each board, being stereo, could drive either 2 drivers or two groups of drivers.)

Has this been done? A link, anyone?
If not yet tried, does anyone like the idea?

cheers

Doug
