Default How easy of a crossover can I get away with for this Vifa combo?

Would it be possible to get by at lower volume levels with a simple 6db crossover (say 3.5 - 4K) and still have it sound fairly good?

Tweeter is a Vifa D27TG-45-06 http://www.soundocity.com/Oregondv/V...27TG-45-06.htm

Woofer is a Vifa M13 shielded (M13SG09) http://www.madisound.com/catalog/pro...oducts_id=1094

Thanks guys

Tino,

The simplest crossover would be to operate the woofer full range (no crossover at all), and wire a 4.7 uf to 6.8 uf capacitor in series with the tweeter.

If you hear to much highs, the D27 tweeter may need an L-Pad to attenuate the tweeter level a few db.

Good quality non-polarized capacitors and L-Pads are available from Parts Express at:

parts-express.com

Good luck,

Larry

Yup. That's how most linear phase speakers are done. And that's a good tweeter, it can take it.

thanks guys for the response. So that woofer wont sound harsh on the upper end running full range? I mean within reason of course if I'm not driving it hard....

I've four 3.3uf and two 1.8uf caps branded as "bennic". They are yellow in colour. I dont know if they are decent or not but they do look better than your standard electrolytic metal can type caps. I picked them up long ago for some car audio stuff I was tinkering with.

Can I take one 3.3 and one 1.8uf and put them in parallel for each tweeter? That should give me about 5.1uf. There should be no issue sonically vs one larger cap right?

Tino,

As Caferacer said, many well know commercial manufacturers use nothing more than a 6 db crossover in some of their systems.

The Bennic capacitors you mentioned should do the job. I have used Bennics several times in full range TL systems that I designed.

The M13 is a very good Mid-woofer, and should have no problems being operated full range, but don't expect deep bass from it.

If you feel the need to give it some additional protection, wire a 0.5 mh air core inductor in series with the woofer.

Ok fantastic guys. I am going to try this tonight. Actually I think I might even have a 0.5mH coil at home... or maybe 0.4mH. I'll try hooking things up with the cap on the tweeter and nothing else and listen for a while and go from there.

Thanks everyone. Glad that I had chosen some drivers that work well together - by accident of course.

Would love to hear how this works out.

Always looking for a woofer that doesn't need a crossover $36 is a good price for such a woofer, if, indeed, it works well w/natural roll off.

Hi, I got the P13WH woofer which somewhat have similiar freq. response with yours, very smooth.

I initially run the woofer directly, but it didn't sound right after a while. So I connected 0.22mH inductor just to cut the higher freq. at 6kHz. Now it sounds much relaxed.

For tweeter I use 12db/oct cutting at 6kHz. It's not complicated at all.

Sensivity difference between my Vifa woofer and Tweeter is -2db (woofer is 88db and tweeter is 90db) so I use L-pad to attenuate them.

It sounds very neutral now (but I don't have measurement devices).
