Default New SEAS curv-cone

Has anyone else noticed the new driver from SEAS with a "curv-cone" cone (U16RCY/P). Just downloaded the spec sheet. Looks mighty interesting to me.

Hi,

Interesting specification, effective cone area and Vas are large for
a 5" unit, appears a genuine bass/mid unit, rather than a driver
designed for HT sub + satellite use.

Allthough some claim waterfalls are useless, they would be interesting.

10L to 15L tuned around 35Hz looks pretty good. for HT sealed 7L.

/sreten.

Very interesting indeed. That's a beautiful looking speaker, and from the looks of it may have a very good price/performance ratio. I see it's listed for about CAD$100 at Solen. I'd be very interested to see some 3rd party distortion measurements.

I with that they would have put the more advanced motor from the L16nrx on this driver. I am sure that it will be available to OEMs that way at some point.

I noticed the curv cone some a short time ago on the SEAS site. Seems we are making real progress: treated paper to polyprop to Al to mag, back to treated paper (Nextel coated) and now back to polyprop. Back to the past? I'm sure the new poly is better than the old poly, but really, is all this just reinventing the wheel? SEAS can't seem to make up their mind as to whether cone material should have little internal damping or have high internal damping.

No doubt the new poly cone is very different being woven fibers

Probably still searching for the very best stiffness/dampening/smooth upper fr (cone shape)/manufacturing price ratio. In one word: the ideal driver for SEAS and for commercial (less filter parts) and diy (easy to filter) speaker builders.

Well not only that people have their own preferences, not only in a cones specific sound, but also in their preference towards certain types of filter. Offering a selection of cone material pleases more people and most likely = more profit.

Seas has had woven fiber for years, as have others. They didn't go over all that well. I used the G17REX-P (6.5") back in 1999 or 2000, woven fiberglass, somewhat like the G18RNX-P. It was an easy driver to work with and very pleasing. I was very impressed with it back then and wondered why it wasn't more popular. I think that there was too much resistance to "highly damped" materials, they're not "truly pistonic" according to some as if that is the make-or-break characteristic. This "new" driver will receive similar assessment by some, no doubt.

Then there was the long-standing B&W woven kevlar driver.

Woven fiber is nothing new, this one's just another "new" driver. The G17 didn't have the glitch at 1K that the newer woven fiber glass G18RNX-P does have. Of course, much of this may still be traceable to the bottom dollar, so-to-speak, or just providing more options. It's certainly not revolutionary.

I still prefer doped paper for midrange duties, it's nice that this material has seen continuous evolutionary improvements.

Dave
