Default first set of diy speakers

well currently i am running these:
http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=105032
Click the image to open in full size.

which apparently suck... i know they do but hey, they were free.

i have a nice sub setup (i think)
  • 12'' ported - a little boomy
  • 15'' acoustic suspension custom built by my uncle, the driver is paper and unmarked external dimensions are 25''x22''x18''Click the image to open in full size.
  • 6 1/2'' powered vented

i would like to build some custom speakers and was thinking about running:
Click the image to open in full size.
dayton rs100 4'' driver
2 left, and 2 right.
and one left one right of these:

Selenium DT150 Super Tweeter with 4"x4" Horn Click the image to open in full size.

the 4'' go down to 80hz but i'll probably cross at 100hz
is this going to sound alright, loud?
i really like what my father has, infinity with emits, they are so amazingly clear, not quite as loud as i would like.
i am also thinking of adding a midbass horn to fill in the 40-250/300
area. this system is for my room and i really would like it to be pretty clear at normal levels, but loud enough to show off.

what do you guys think for an enclose, and am I in the right direction at all?

I think it's a bad driver combo - the Seleniums are far more sensitive at 107 db compared to the Daytons at 84 - you should find drivers with sensitivities much closer to eachother, even if the woofers are to be doubled up.

They are just very different drivers and if you want really loud don't use the Daytons - they are very clean but are quite inefficient - use other Selenium drivers or similar efficiency.

And I'm not sure what you mean by crossing the Daytons at 100 and still add a midbass for 40-250 - a lot of overlap there. In any event any horn-loaded/high efficiency drivers you use will swamp the Daytons.

>>> I think it's a bad driver combo...

Me too. Tell us your budget and we can put our heads together for you to come up with something even better than your father's Infinity's.

Also, tell us what you basically would like the finished speakers to look like - size and shape. What space they will be going into and if you want bookshelf speakers or floorstanding?

i'd like them to be floorstanding, max dimensions w x h x d are 3 x 3.5 x 2
my budget is around $250 so i guess i won't be able to get anything super great

what do you guys think about the midbass horn?

Those dimensions are in feet I assume?

I think you could do well to use a pair (one per speaker) of Tangband W3-871 for treble down to around 800Hz. Although they are quite affordable, they are very good in this range and sound very clear. You could even use them in a nopen baffle for the mid-treble range giving really good clarity.

Due to being able to cross quite low, you can then use a larger woofer that can go a lot louder and give better dynamics. It also makes it easier to do a crossover because its not such a critical area. Woofer could be a HiVi F8.

Crossover can be a pretty simple because the woofer is within 1dB of the Tangband sensitivity and you can use 1st or second order. Second order electrical is probably better (i.e. two crossover parts per driver). You can tune it by ear quite easily.

Cabinet can be a floorstanding ported design. Easy to work out the exact specs if you want to go down this route.

Zahph Audio is also an ideal place to look if you want to just build a proven design.
