Default Open Baffle, do the sides matter?

What are the functions of the two sides in an open baffle design utilizing an, let's say, A-N's super 12? Do they just provide an angled support for the main board or do they also help to increase the bass? I am thinking about, in order to maximize the front board size and to minimize cost, simply using two 4x8 mdf boards for the drivers and lean them against a wall. Thanks!

That does sound simple! How long is the wall you will be leaning them up against? Maybe you can fabricate a top behind the 4x8 with some rubber of some kind to reduce vibration against the wall where it touches. Also, maybe consider bracing on the back so the boards dont bend over time from the weight of the driver.

Do you have the opportunity to place the baffles this way?

mudihan, the whole point of open baffle is to cancel the sound emanating to the sides in order to minimize early reflections

to do what you suggest is almost the same as putting speaker in the box
