Default JBL LE 20-1 Aquarius

I pulled my le20-1 JBL tweeter out and hooked it up directly, I get sound but very fuzzy...Is it blown? Can it be repaired or do I need to replace it?

The low frequency info that the tweeter doesn't normally play may be making it sound fuzzy; over excursion, and rapidly rising distortion. It sounded wrong when it was still in the cabinet? can you measure the resistance? If its around four to eight ohms depending on the speaker you might be ok. much less than four and something is definitely wrong. More than eight might mean the same thing. You can also try very gently pushing it in and out. Scraping/rubbing? no good.

It's generally bad practice to run a tweeter without a highpass filter or control of the frequency spectrum.

Why would you do that? Is there some issue with how it plays in the system other than that it hardly even qualifies as a tweeter by contemporary standards?

Default Beginner

I would imagine that with all y'all's experience you could guess I was a newbie at this stuff and obviously don't have a clue to what I'm doing. Barely qualifies as a tweeter by contemporary standards... hmmmm, OK. Testing it properly and graphs to follow is beyond where I'm currently at on the learning curve. The one tweeter doesn't seem to be working while in the speaker so I pulled it out and just hooked it up to see if it had sound, and it does but way distorted. The other tweeter works exceedingly well. While I may be new to repairs, I like to think that I have, and have heard some pretty good speakers, and I'm liking these JBL Aquarius 1's quite a bit.
So, is there another way to test it? Or should I just buy another tweeter?

New cone/diaphragm kits for them are no longer available, but replacement complete should be relatively inexpensive from eBay or other sources.

If you want to verify that it is defective first, install it in the other speaker and see if it still sounds bad....

Yeah, sorry, the "contemporary standards" thing was gratuitous, but you should be informed regarding what you're working with there relative to whatever your expectations might be.

It's vintage gear, with "vintage" sound....
