A notch filter is just the opposite of a band-pass filter. A band-pass filter would pass a certain range of frequencies (all the frequencies inside the band), while it would cut out all the others. A notch filter cuts out a certain band of frequencies (all the frequencies inside the notch) and passes everything else.

I see, do you happen to know which frequencies BG is cutting out with the notch filter they are using in the RD40?

from BG data sheet

The RD series drivers should be used with a notch filter which equalizes a natural frontal cavity resonance. This peak is pronounced in the 5 kHz area on-axis, with a diminishing peak further off-axis.

Sounds undesirable.
