How did you test for audible differences? If it was not direct A/B I wouldn't trust my subjective impression.

? Do binaural recordings, thoroughly match levels and you'll be able to assess any property you like to.

Buy two in-ear mikes and record what you want to test with the mikes in your ears.

I've never found foam to be all that great an absorber, but it could be the rockwool which will be more reflective at higher frequencies than the fluff.

You changed 2 things at once, you need to go back to where you started in the proto and work from there.
