Default wiring

how do you wire a cab that has 4 8ohm speakers in it to match a 4ohm head?

I don't think you do. I think you series and parallel and be happy that you aren't going to overdrive your amp with the 8 ohms.

No, the 4 ohm rating on the amp tells you the least impedance you can run while keeping the amp stable and fairly cool. The 8 ohm speakers tell you that your 4 ohm amp will be fine.

ok, lets see if i got it......i have a 4 ohm head and i can put in 4 8ohm speakers into a cab to have 8 ohms. this will work because the 4 is higher than 8. right?

Well no,

The 4 - 8 ohm drivers, when wired series/parallel will return you to 8 ohms. Your amp needs a minimum of 4 to run properly and not overheat. 8 is higher so it will offer the amp plenty of resistance so as to not let it work too hard. Think of it like this: The amp needs a certain amount of resistance so that it doesn't "let out" too much power. Something has to hold that power back or it will overheat.
