Troels VS. Zaph - 2 Way Bookshelf Showdown

I've been search for forum for awhile now looking for a high end 2 way bookshelf speaker to build.

Two drivers kept popping up the Scan Speak 15W8530K00 and Vifa XT25.

Two designs, but which to choose, lucky they both use the same drivers.

Troels - http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/EllamXT.htm

VS.

Zaph - http://www.zaphaudio.com/ZD5.html

Any takers? Which one would you choose? Who has built them?

"Any takers? Which one would you choose? Who has built them?"

If you haven't already try searching - there are at least a few people who have built the ZD5; I don't know about the Ellam, but it would take one person who has built or heard both to provide any kind of useful comparison.

As for the Ellam having fewer crossover components, Zaph makes no apologies for his XO for the ZD5 - it is deliberately as high-end and thorough as he was able to go - given the cost and quality of the drivers he felt a no-holds-barred crossover was the only sensible thing to do.

Between these two, I'd definitely choose Zaph's. There's a reason why Zaph's crossover is complex. This is a true 2nd order (LR2) design which means a larger overlap between drivers for more natural, seamless integration. Troels' is a loosened LR4 design (i.e., a little shallower rolloffs than 4th order for phase alignment of drivers on a flat baffle). Zaph's crossover, in this sense, is more sophisticated and, as a result, has less distortion in time domain. At least in theory.

Just a generalization here

Just a generalization here. Zaph tends to have a no non-sense approach toward x-over complexity and component selection. If he decided to build a high-end design, I would tend to believe he made it more complex for a reason. A real reason!

Zaph gives you more options for "tuning" the x-over and the enclosure...

Hey, I just might be a fanboy!

Here is my real question. ZD5 or the Usher 8945P 2-Way?

http://www.geocities.com/woove99/Sp.../Usher_2way.htm

It seems to me that the 8945P is just a flat out better driver (harmonic distortion) when compared to the little scan-speak. But, I'm kind of guessing that Zaph's crossover design is better thought out considering all of his experience. I'm torn, but the 8945P would also be significantly cheaper it seems.

How deep are your pockets? I personally would go with the zd5 which I am building for myself. Just my choice. The zd5's do eat into your pockets pretty darn deep that is for sure. Will be spending about $1000 on the zd5 build in total after enclosures, crossovers, binding posts, ports, mids and tweets

Take money out and ignore the fact that the 8945 will obviously have improved low end performance. Which one is the better speaker I wonder? Another thing that bothers me about the 8945 is that all of the graphs are simulated, no real measurements. I'd love to see FR and harmonic distortion graphs from the 8945 so that I could compare them directly with the ZD5.

Note that Zaph's testing conditions are different between the 6.5" and 5.5" groups. The 6.5" drivers' distortion levels on the plot are lower than real. So, the two drivers' distortion levels are about the same.

Zaph's crossover is a LR2 design and mine is LR4. In theory, LR2 has less time domain distortion (180 degrees out of phase versus 360 degrees out of phase between drivers). Also, it is possible to have more natural driver integration due to a larger overlap between midwoofer and tweeter.

I'm currently experimenting with a LR2 xover with the 8945P and 810921 drivers. I use exactly the same network topology as Zaph's ZD5, including the ladder delay circuit. I will see which I prefer between LR4 and LR2.

driver 6.5" cannot match the SQ on midrange area 5.5" but this driver can match a 6.5 in the bass ;)
this little scan have fs 30hz ,in my room the bass are incredible!!!
is a rare Jewel

little suggestion: go for ellam, the ss9800 are wonderfull ,and tomorrow you have the possibility upgrade to d'appolito config.

hope this helps
