Roger Russell's IDS-25 is an awesome looking speaker to me. I'd like to build a set similiar to his but the drivers he chose are rather expensive individually for a 3.5" driver much less the cost for 50 of them.

The driver he uses for the IDS-25

Would the following driver be an acceptable substitute for my own version of a 25 driver full range line array? Cabinet would be similair construction.

I'm aware of the inherent problems with line arrays and I can live with that so please don't suggest other speakers to build or tell me all the bad things about line arrays.

Thanks,

Hi MPM,

Have you seen the Apex Jr site?

www.apexjr.com/speakerstuff.html

I too have been toying with constructing a pair of LA's (& yes, I too get tired of hearing well-intentioned advice from well-intentioned people!).

I have a couple of projects to complete before I get to building my arrays, but the items of interest at Apex Jr would be the M&K 3" FR drivers and the el-cheapo tweeters (which have had some good reports ... as long as they're not crossed too low.)

My recommendation is to buy a number (6) of the cheap M&K FR's. At 12 ohms each, you could parallel 3 series-pairs, returning you to 8 ohms. Try these out in a temporary baffle, and if they seem OK, buy more and proceed.

If you do the above, pls also tell me what you find! ... as it's what I intend to do when I tidy up other projects.

cheers

Doug

Thanks Brisso57. I'm familiar with ApexJR and the B&K 3". I'm still just thinking about the line arrays and would probably buy the drivers in a few installments so I can hide the purchase from the wife:) if I go ahead with the project.

Hiding a pair of line arrays is like trying to hide an elephant. You need SALESMANSHIP!

:)

If they sound good she would possibly let them into the living room since the footprint will be relatively small. I currently have 4 floor standing speakers as my mains and surrounds. She accepted those for the small footprint, sound and the lovely piano black finish:) . Maybe she loves me a little bit also.

I like'em. Not so sensitive like mine (I used Infinity Reference 4.5" as midranges), but lower Fs and smaller size. If I knew about them I would probably save some money...

Speaking of "Her Approval", I put mine inside of the wall around the screen; she likes that!

Take a peek at the Zalytron website. They have several designs for line arrays. I have a set built with the Axon 6s1. They are a very nice coated paper from Peerless of India driver branded for Axon. They are $180 for 10. If you are looking for some of these I am considering getting rid of mine.

MPM -

In terms of the Vifa vs. Peerless drivers - they are both a little ragged at the top end - rising response for the Vifa and a marked peak for the Peerless. If you go with either one I would recommend a little filtering in those areas, namely a notch for the Peerless.

I like the very broad, smooth band in the Peerless myself - I didn't even know about these until I saw your link - I think I will get these for my surround speakers I'm building, as well as the small speakers I'm building for my mini HT system in my bedroom.

For a very small footprint, take a look at this P.E. project if you haven't seen it - perhaps not for the same drivers but for alternate enclosure ideas.

Also, I'd still want to use tweeters to get smoothly up to about 15K or so. Just my 2c.
