To be honest, Svante,I share your views. I have written my own box software, building on Thiel, Small and Benson. I once thought I could make a little money with it, but experience with other freeware offerings (spreadsheets) has shown me that people don't really appreciate what goes into creating a useful piece of software.

People use it and you rarely hear a positive word from anyone.
If your software does something they are interested in, they just want to know how you did it. Nearly every email I received about those spreadsheets (even ones I didn't write) was a request for the password so they could incorporate it into their own software. I said no, but I gave references to them where they could find the information. They didn't want to search/figure it out for themselves. Some sent angry responses - Can you believe it?

I actually joked with one guy who was admittedly writing his own for profit software that he could have my code if he gave me his car (A nice one on his website venture). He sent back a quite humorous reply, agreeing that he was asking for a lot.

My suggestion to use freeware does not imply one should not donate to the authors if the program is found useful and their contact info is in the program. I once suggested to a fellow DIYer to put up a site for some of his donationware offerings. He got one donation.

It is interesting that people love to use the freeware, but question it because it is free. The truth is that if you don't value yourself, nobody else will value you either. This goes for your time as well.

Since Bassbox was for a long time the only software that was mass-marketed to DIYers, it has become some sort of defacto standard. It does not truly deserve that status, IMO. Soundeasy is far and away a better program, and not that expensive when you consider Bassbox used to cost about $400-600, IIRC, for a program that does little more than WinISD.

I think Bass Box and X-Over pro are great. I have both and love them. Yes there are limitations but so everything else has it’s own limitations. I’ve gotten my licensed copies of both for $99 on ebay. They pop up from time to time as a damaged box combo with books and everything.

Understanding of the process is necessary no matter what software program you are inclined to use. Free ware is unquestionably cheapest way to go.

Ah, nice. I was afraid after my last post that I would have upset you. Anyway, I have not tried bassbox myself, so I cannot tell if it is any good. Actually I use other software than my own very little. I suppose I should do more "espionage" than I do.

i have it but i am still just looking for that simple equation that was in the book that radio shack sold in the 90's i think the title was speaker building i had it but i haven't seen it around my house for years and don't know if it got destroyed in a fire i had at my house

Bassbox is nothing special. Paying for box alignment software is foolish. Save your money for a crossover simulator. BTW - XOPro, by the makers of bassbox, is a total joke. Speaker workshop does more, for no $$ at all.
