Default berylium tweeters question.

Hello to all,

I have a few question regarding berylium tweeters,

Is the usher berylium tweeter available on sale anywhere, In raw form?

Is there any other manufacturer that sells berylium tweeters , currently available for DIYers?

Has anyone here , heard berylium tweeters, Particularly from focal and usher. How do they differ from a high-end soft dome tweeter in subjective sound quality?

Are they (berylium tweeters) sound so good that they're worth their price? ( Around 1,000 usd each, I pressume.)

Thank you.

TAD, Goto, and JBL sell beryllium tweets, but JBL's may be a little hard to find.

I believe that berylium has been "banned", at least in Japan so even Goto is now using titanium ... so prices may go up on used berylium drivers

Export of Beryllium is prohibited, so the Beryllium versions of the Gotos are for the domestic market only. Does that mean TADs are not manufactured in Japan?

Beryllium oxide is one of the most poisonous substances known (moreso even than MDF...), so I'm not surprised that their use is becoming restricted. I'm not sure of their actual value over other strong metals like titanium (other than rarity and thus w*** value).

Be has atomic number 4 - it is the first stable metal in the periodic table (Lithium is so reactive that it just oxidises away). This makes it very light (density is only 1.85), but its stiffness is pretty good. The net result is that the speed of sound (13000m/s) in Be is higher than any other metal, so for a given geometry, resonances occur at much higher frequencies. The low weight also helps with sensitivity.

For comparison, Ti has density 4.5 and speed of sound 4140m/s.

The only things I can think of that would have a higher speed of sound than Be are diamond (18350m/s) and probably Boron Nitride. Maybe Aluminium Nitride too.

As a metal, Be is much easier to fabricate than diamond.

Be diaphragm JBL 2435 compression drivers are often available on ebay. I never heard a better compression driver. My opinion.

How high do you want to go?? The 2435 is available on Ebay like Tom says however it rolls off a bit above 15K or so. If you want extension above 20K this is not your driver.

Damn nice sounding driver.
