Default Dipole Driver Selection

I've recently bought a 6 channel (125W each) amp and a DCX2496 Behringer for my next winter project. I've built box speakers before, but my research and findings on dipoles leave me curious and wanting to experiment.

Standard combinations of 1" dome tweeter with 8" woofers are common on the main panel. My question is; would a 10" (Vifa MA26WR02) and a 3" (HiVi B3N) create too large a gap at crossover, and miss the high end frequency range? Am I better off with a 1"dome tweeter? I've read some great documentation written by Linkwitz on Dipoles and driver evaluations by Zaph|Audio.

My intent is provide the energy desired at the low end and mid-range.

Thanks

I have a similar setup with 6 channels of 30 W and the DCX2496

This is a dream to experiment with.

The B3n may or may not work without a tweeter.
But if the baffle is a reasonable size, it will easily cross to any 10" driver.

My current setup is a NEO3 with Back plate removed, a Seas MC14 ans a pair of Dayton RS 270. I cross the mid range anywhere from 150 Hz to 400 Hz, depending on the day of the week, my SPL requirements and the baffle area.

Before that, I used a 3/4" NEO tweeter crossed to a pair of NSB and 2 generic 12" buy-out woofers. Pure fun for less than $100.

My suggestion is to try a couple of inexpensive wide range drivers and have fun.

Good Luck.

Doug

No, you probably need to add a tweeter too; the idea with a NEO3 seems to be good.

Here is an example simulation with your suggested drivers:

Thanks for the quick replies.

Doug, how do you like the NEO3 compared to domes? Does it suit dipole application well? Are your RS270s dipole as well?

I may go the cheap driver route on a baffle and do some measurements to better understand behaviour first. Any comments on size of Mid driver used for listening (sound quality), as opposed to what a freq. response may show?

Thanks again

Me to!

Here is a link to a very well executed project, he uses the BG neo3 a 4" Jordan JX92S and two 15" peerless SLS. The project in inspired by the Jamo 909 reference speaker.

I think the 4" fullrange was chosen such that it would be relatively easy to devise a simple xover to the neo3. The system is biamped with a TacT/Lyngdorf digital amp taking care of the eq on the bass and the xover between bass and midrange. This is done in the digital domain.

A PC can do this as well, now that you have a 6 channel amp, you may implement a full 3 way digital xover.

Any idea of the T/S for them? Is it still possible to get them from the states?

That is why you need digital EQ, the sound is repotedly very good.

Take a look at the new SB acoustics 12" drivers, higher Qts, I think I read that they are comming out with a 15" driver to.
