Hello,
Lately I decided to make some improvements at my old DIY instrument cabinet, which consists of Eminence Apt-80, Alpha-6 Delta-15lfa and a low quality 2 way x-over (this is the part I want to replace). Due to lack of a better x-over at the time I used this one (3.5khz x-over point) with a rather weird wiring (tweeter and mid in parallel). Now I want to replace the x-over with an appropriate one. Since Alpha-6 is a kind of bottleneck in this setup I want to keep mid frequency range narrow and use this speaker as a sort of helper for Apt:80 to get the most of Delta-15lfa (~500watts), otherwise Delta-15lfa and Apt:80 duo covers the whole spectrum actually (according to their documents). Now here is my question: One option is using one of these stock x-overs (Only eminence ones are readily available here in close proximity PXB3:3k5 3-way 500Hz/3.5kHz (risk for tweeter and/or mid?) PXB3:5k0 3-way 500Hz/5kHz (risk for mid and/or tweeter?) Other option is taking two and making a kind of dual one: PXB2:1k6 2-way 1.6kHz (low side for bass, high side for next x-over ) PXB2:5k0 2-way 5kHz (takes signal from former x-over and distributes this to mid, high) With this duo, I guess I can load the cabinet with at least 400w (x-overs' limit) and get the most Delta-15 with less load on Alpha and Apt. What do you guys think? Regards Temporal |

Hello again,
At least could some one tell me whether connecting two crossovers in such way is something that should be avoided? Regards Temporal |

If I understand correctly, then just combining the two crossovers together is not ideal. What you could do is construct a composite, use the low-mid components from one crossover board, removing the unused parts, and do the opposite to the mid-high crossover board. If you have difficulties working out what to remove, trace out the circuit diagrams and post them here.
This is by no means an ideal way of doing it, but it should get you going.

Thanks for reply
As you see I'm not experienced in crossovers, though I thought combining both, just means a 4th ? order bandpass for mid section By the way here are the images (circuits and values are almost apparent) PXB2:1k6 2-way 1.6kHz 12dB/octave LP 8 ohms 400W http://www.realproaudio.com/popup_image.php/pID/37 PXB2:5k0 2-way 5kHz 12dB/octave LP 8 ohms 400W http://www.realproaudio.com/popup_image.php/pID/754 I'll try to trace and post the diagrams Temporal |

Hi again
Anybody with some new suggestions? It seems I gonna buy these two x-overs tomorrow. And since they don't have resistors (which would be subject to removal when cascading two x-overs) I don't see a reason to remove other parts (capacitors and inductors). What do you experts think? Thanks in advance Temporal. PS: A power distribution question; Considering RMS ratings of 500w for woofer, 100 for mid and 45w (85W after 5khz) for tweeter, should I prefer 3k5 cut point for mid instead of 1k6 to keep it safe? |
