Default Open baffle questions

With open baffle speakers, do the drivers need any particular specification ?
As in is a speaker with a higher Q better than one with low Q etc.

Is there any formula for baffle size etc.

Or is it all just a matter of trial and error ????

Anything else I need to know.

Many of your questions have been answered in two wonderful websites. www.linkwitz.com and www.musicanddesign.com. Get the A.B.C. dipole to model your baffle.

Primordially, you'd want a high QTS driver

You can also use series resistance to raise the QTS of the system if your speaker has a value lower than ~0.5 (some say higher, depends on who you ask). Of course it will rob you of some efficiency in the process...

Martin King has a great design study on OB speakers here: http://www.quarter-wave.com/General/OB_Design.pdf. One of his recommendations "is to use woofer drivers that are at least 6 to 10 dB more efficient than the rest of the speaker system and having Qts values between 1.0 and 1.2". The article is being discussed in the Fullrange forum here:New MJK Baffle Article.
