Are you referring to bracing speaker cabinets? Maybe you're talking about rib braces - using small lengths of wood attached across the inner walls to damp resonance.

Sorry, I had to make clear that I was referring to bracing speaker cabinets - not to to shelf or dental braces

A shelf brace is one that fills the entire cabinet in one dimension (as a solid shelf does in any cabinet) but has areas cut out to allow air flow. Could be in the shape of a ladder I guess but not normally referred to as such.

Hmmm. Actually this is one of a few things which could look like a ladder. Or maybe they refer to a few horizontal bars... Anyway, aparently this is not a common term. Thanks!
